___Machu Picchu, meaning 'old mountain' in quechua, is situated 120
kms north of Cuzco at 2430 m above sea level, in the middle of a
tropical mountain forest. Machu Picchu remained unknown to the world
until its discovery in 1911 by the American archeologist Hiram Bingham.
It was probably the most amazing urban creation of the Inca Empire at
its height, with its giant walls, terraces and ramps. It is the place
of some of the most magnificent examples of Inca masonry, e.g. the
Puerta de Amarus (Gateway of Snakes).

___In the reserve of El Vizcano, Baja California, the Sierra de
San Francisco was home to a population now disappeared (100 B.C.-1300 A.D.,),
which left one of the most outstanding collections of rock paintings
in the world. Remarkably well-preserved because of the dry climate and
the inaccessibility of the site, the paintings illustrate people and
many animal species (mammals, fish, reptiles and birds), using extremely
varied colors and techniques.

___ The Avenue of the Dead runs the length of Teotihuacn. This
city, the site of the most urbanized civilization in Mesoamerica,
was designed to be seen from the heavens. It once covered an area
of 8 square miles and had a population of 100,000-120,000, making
it probably the biggest city of the world at that time. The
significance of Teotihuacn is demonstrated by the fact that 500
years after its fall the Aztecs worshipped at the ruined site.

___ After the conquest of Toledo in 1085 by King Alfonso VI, the old
Visigothic capital replaced Crdoba as the biggest cultural center of
Western Europe. Raimundo, archbishop of Toledo established in the XII
century a School of Translators with the purpose of translating into
Latin the scientific and philosophical treatises written in Arabic. The
School of Translators, like Toledo itself, was the scene of a fusion of
Christian, Arab, and Jewish scholars, working together to rescue
writings by Plato, Aristotle, Ptolemy, Euclid, etc, from the
oblivion they had fallen in Medieval Europe. The School of Translators
attracted students and scholars from all over the world and reached its
zenith in the XIII century under King Alfonso X the Wise.
